1. Who has the most hat tricks in the Premier league: Sergio Agüero – 12 hat-tricks
Sergio Agüero introduced himself to English football on a hot August evening in 2011, coming off the bench for Manchester City to score twice against Swansea City. Any concerns that he would struggle to adapt to the Premier League were dispelled that night and it took just a few weeks for him to score his first hat-trick in the league, netting three times against Wigan Athletic in September.
It’s strange that such a skilful and consistent player in front of goal didn’t win another Premier League treble until 2014 and, like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Agüero’s hat-trick prowess has only grown stronger as he’s gotten older.
By the time he turned 29 in 2017, he had scored five hat-tricks, but then scored seven more between the ages of 29 and 31, including two hat-tricks in the space of a week in February 2019 against Arsenal and Chelsea. Agüero's 12th hat-trick, a Premier League record, came against Aston Villa in January 2020, and in the process he overtook Thierry Henry to become the highest-scoring non-English player in Premier League history.
2. Alan Shearer – 11 hat-tricks
The Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer has held the hat-trick record for a long time, and like a Generation X music journalist, his hat-trick record owes much, perhaps too much, to the years 1995 and 1996.
It may seem hard to believe, but in the 476-day period between 26 November 1994 and 16 March 1996, Shearer scored eight hat-tricks, including five in the 1995-96 season alone (unsurprisingly a Premier League record).
Although Shearer scored more goals for Newcastle than Blackburn Rovers, nine of his 11 hat-tricks came for the Lancashire club, an era when his mobility, pace and shooting ability combined to make him a real threat.
His final achievement in that department was a five-goal haul against Sheffield Wednesday in September 1999. A man of the 1990s, scoring 11 hat-tricks in the 1990s; you can’t get more pure than that. Oh, and considering no one under the age of 18 has scored a hat-trick in the Premier League, it’s worth pointing out that Shearer scored three on his full First Division debut for Southampton in 1988, aged just 17, setting a record in a career full of such records.
3. Robbie Fowler – 9 hat-tricks
Robbie Fowler, one of the most prolific goal-scorers in Premier League history, has a remarkable record of scoring hat-tricks throughout his career. As a teenager, Fowler netted two hat-tricks for Liverpool, with the second becoming the fastest in Premier League history for a significant period. He went on to score five hat-tricks before turning 22, an incredible achievement. In the 2001-02 season, Fowler made history once again by scoring two hat-tricks in the same season, for two different clubs, Leeds United and Liverpool, within just two months.
Fowler's hat-trick for Leeds in 2001 was his last in the Premier League, but he continued to make an impact in the competition. He remains the only player to score four goals with his left foot in a single Premier League match, achieving this feat twice: against Bolton in 1995 and Middlesbrough in 1996. His left foot, known for its clinical precision and power, is arguably one of the most iconic weapons in Premier League history. Fowler’s remarkable ability to finish with his left foot left defenders and goalkeepers helpless, earning him a place among the greatest goal-scorers the Premier League has ever seen. His left foot alone deserves a place in a football museum for its contribution to the game.
4. Harry Kane - 8 Hat-Tricks
Harry Kane has scored a lot of goals for Tottenham Hotspur, we all know that. We also know that Harry Kane has scored a lot of hat-tricks in the Premier League. Specifically in 2015 and 2017. Kane scored two in 2015 as a promising youngster, then in 2017 he scored six hat-tricks in a year, including two in four days in May and two in four days around Christmas.
However, since his hat-trick for Spurs against Southampton on Boxing Day 2017, the England captain and World Cup Golden Boot winner has not scored another goal in the domestic competition.
Now playing for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, Kane took just five games to score his first hat-trick in the German top flight, while he has added his second and third hat-tricks in nine and 10 appearances in the league respectively. Of course, the Germans don't consider it a hat-trick unless a player scores three goals in a row in a game, but we'll let Kane fight that battle.
5. Thierry Henry – 8 Hat-Tricks
Thierry Henry is the only player to win the Premier League Golden Boot four times so it’s no surprise that hat-tricks played a big part in his dominance. His first goal came against Leicester City in 2000 when he was 23, but it wasn’t until the latter stages of his Premier League career that Henry really found his hat-trick rhythm, often scoring them in perfect pairs before he left England for Spain.
There were two in April 2004 against Liverpool and Leeds United as Arsenal were closing in on their unbeaten season, two more in March/April 2005 and then two in January/May 2006, the final treble coming in the final game at Highbury, against Wigan Athletic. Henry is synonymous with Highbury so it makes sense that all eight of his Premier League hat-tricks for the Gunners have come at this memorable venue.
6. Michael Owen – 8 Hat-Tricks
The third player to score eight Premier League hat-tricks is also the only player under the age of 18 to score a penalty in the Premier League; Michael Owen. The former Liverpool, Newcastle United and Man Utd striker had a stellar career, a star who was already blazing away before injury took its toll. This is illustrated by the fact that three of Owen’s hat-tricks came when he was 18, and four of his other five before he turned 24.
Indeed, only four players have scored a Premier League hat-trick before the age of 18. Owen has three, Robbie Fowler has one, Evan Ferguson scored one in 2023-24 against Newcastle, and the fourth biggest cash prize is Chris Bart-Williams for Sheffield Wednesday in 1993.
Owen's eighth and final Premier League hat-trick came in December 2005 for Newcastle against West Ham. At the time, Owen felt like a seasoned veteran, despite it coming just three days after his 26th birthday.
Owen is also one of only three players to have scored a hat-trick on Valentine's Day, along with Matthew Le Tissier and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. You love seeing that.
7. Erling Haaland – 8 hat-tricks
Erling Haaland makes the list despite only being in his third season in the Premier League. Haaland scored four hat-tricks in 2022-23 on his way to breaking the record for most goals scored in a single Premier League campaign. The first two of those, against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest, came within four days of each other.
In 2023-24, he added hat-tricks against Fulham and Wolves, scoring four times against Wolves, while in the first three games of 2024-25, the Norwegian added hat-tricks against Ipswich Town and West Ham to take his tally to eight. Incredibly, only three players in Premier League history have scored more hat-tricks than him.
8. Wayne Rooney – 7 Hat-Tricks
Wayne Rooney, one of only three players to score more than 200 Premier League goals, is no surprise to see on this list. Rooney’s Premier League career was long and marked by a string of impressive hat-tricks. Unlike legends such as Robbie Fowler, Harry Kane and Michael Owen, Rooney did not just score hat-tricks in a short period but throughout his career. He scored his first hat-trick for Manchester United against Bolton in 2006, and did it again for a seventh time when playing for Everton against West Ham in 2017.
